What does it mean to be religious?

Religious Founders

A founder means the person or people who start or begin something. The founders are seen as important people and are venerated (deeply respected) by the members of these religions. Prayers may be said to them and offerings may be made to them, but with the exception of Christianity, the founders are not considered to be gods. However, their teachings or the examples set by their lives and experiences are usually seen to be important to follow.

One religion that is an exception to this is Hinduism. 'Hindu' was given to describe the people who lived near the river Indus in India: the word 'Indus' became 'Hindu'. These people did not all believe the same thing, but there were enough similarities to start talking about Hindus.

A brief summary

Research activity

Use the internet to find out more about each of the main religions' founders: Siddhartha Gotama (Buddhism), Jesus (Christianity), Muhammad (Islam), Abraham (Judaism), and Guru Nanak (Sikhism)
